Essential trekking gears for October

Unlike in September, the Annapurna Base Camp Temperature in October gets colder. With nighttime temperature averaging around -6˚C, the daytime temperature also gets low, around 6-7˚C. Thus, you’ll need proper trekking gear to trek here in October.

Windstopper for the day, a down jacket for the evening, and a sleeping bag for the nights are necessary. Make sure that your Windstopper comes with air ventilation to prevent you from sweating.

Down jacket that can withstand -15˚C is usually recommended for October. Also, a sleeping bag withstanding -20˚C is a highly recommended one.

Besides these, you’ll need thermal layers for the upper and lower body. You should include a beanie, neck buff, and woollen gloves to keep your head, ear, and finger warm.

The day hike at lower altitudes often gets warmer on sunny days. Thus, with thin layering from the inside, you can also wear half-pants. If you want to avoid carrying half pants, you can still buy trekking pants that can be convertible into half pants.

medium-lightweight backpack will be sufficient for you. However, if you’re carrying additional gear, you’ll get a trekking porter to help you carry your backpacks throughout the trek.

Cons of Annapurna Base Camp Trek in October

Even the most beautiful time of the year can be unpleasant for some, not with the weather but with a crowd of trekkers. For some, the crowd-filled tea houses can be noisy. And some may not get desired accommodation even after paying the proper trek fee.

There are a few drawbacks to October being the best time, and every trekker planning the Annapurna Base Camp Trek in October.

Crowded Annapurna Base Camp Trek Route

With October’s finest weather, a record number of trekkers plan this trek. As a result, the route gets crowded. And at most cases, you must stop, give way to another trekker, and resume the trek again.

With more trekkers en route, often, you’ll get bored. For many, trekking is a way to immerse in nature, away from the hustling and bustling city life. And with crowds, those expecting some peaceful hike find it an unpleasant time.

For an off-beat trek experience in October, you can plan Tsho Rolpa Trek. It is among Nepal’s most affordable, negligible trekkers and adventurous off-beat trek routes. Unlike the established routes of Annapurna and Everest region, the Tsho Rolpa Lake Trek Route sees very few trekkers, not more than 1000 yearly. It’s an ideal mix of serene nature, elegant landscapes, beautiful settlements, rivers, glaciers, and glacial lakes.

Difficulty getting a desired accommodation

With a limited number of tea houses and ever-increasing trekkers each year, October’s highest number fills almost every room. And at some cases, sleeping in the dining hall remains the last option.

If your agency doesn’t reserve rooms, your guide will have trouble finding one for you. It’s not that you won’t get one. But, you may not get the rooms you prefer, and for some, single rooms can be necessary.

Thus, almost every tea house gets filled with numbers of trekkers in October. In recent years, multiple tea houses have been made at the Annapurna Base Camp site and lower places like Bamboo, Dovan, and Jhinu to meet the demand.
