The tea houses we stay at every place are the best ones in the region. So, they serve quality meals for trekkers, guides, and porters.

Here’s what is inclusive in the trek cost:

  • Airport pickup on arrivals
  • Lakeside, Pokhara to Birethanti (Shared/Private Jeep based on group sizes)
  • Ghandruk to Lakeside, Pokhara (Shared/Private Jeep based on group sizes)

FYI, this five-day trek starts from Pokhara. It requires trekkers to travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara on their own. You can travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara by an overland tourist bus or flight. The trek doesn’t include your travel between Kathmandu and Pokhara. However, on request and add-ons, we’ll help you organize your travel between these two cities before and after the trek.

Trek Porters and Luggage Weight Limit

We provide a trek porter to carry your heavy backpack throughout the trek. This gives you an amazing opportunity to trek light with a small daypack. On this trek, we assign trek porter(s) based on the group size.

We provide a trek porter for a group of two or more trekkers. A porter carries about an 8-10 kg backpack of one trekker, with a combined weight of no more than 20 kilos.

In this particular trek, the itinerary is short. So, you don’t need to bring loads of clothes and gear. We’ll provide one duffel bag for two trekkers to pack clothes and trek gear, about 15 kilos for the porter.

Again, we request that you not bring many clothes and gear. You’ll trek for only 4 days, where you don’t need a lot of clothes.

Travel Essentials

Travel essentials, including documents, visas, passports, and Nepali currency, are as important as trekking gear and clothes. Here’s what you’ll need to trek to Ghorepani Poon Hill and Ghandruk as an international traveller.

Nepali Tourist Visa

Except for a few countries, most international travellers to Nepal get a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport. Immigration at Kathmandu airport issues on-arrival visas.

You can get a Nepali tourist visa for 15, 30, and 90 days with respective visa fees. Getting it is straightforward at the kiosk booths.

We don’t provide or issue Nepali tourist visas, and the trek cost doesn’t include the visa fees.

For details, please check the official website of the Department of Immigration, Nepal.

Travel Insurance

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with Ghandruk isn’t a risky or demanding adventure. It’s an extremely safe trek with no difficulties whatsoever. However, you’ll still need travel insurance before joining this trek.

Any outdoor adventure might turn into a nightmare without noticing. For example, if you slip on the route, get injured, or fracture bones, you’ll need emergency medical attention. First aid support won’t be sufficient. And at such instances, for immediate expatriation, a helicopter rescue is a must. Hence, to get a helicopter rescue during emergencies, you’ll need a travel insurance policy. Other than emergency rescue, the travel insurance covers a multitude of areas such as loss & damage of personal items, delayed schedules, etc.

We suggest that you provide us with proof of travel insurance before joining the trek. It helps us to coordinate with helicopters and related stakeholders should you experience any emergencies or attention along the trek.

Nepali currency for personal expenses

Personal expenses during the trek are services other than those included in “Cost Includes”. For every use of extra services, you must pay at the tea houses. And to pay for these, you’ll need Nepali rupees, as most tea houses accept Nepali currency. Your credit card and international cards don’t work in the mountains.

If you’re wondering about your personal expenses, they are WiFi, electricity recharge, hot shower, boiled drinking water, bottled water, extra meals and drinks, etc.

We advise you to exchange your currency for Nepali rupees in Kathmandu or in Pokhara.

Trek Permits

You’ll need an Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with an overnight stay in Ghandruk Village. The permit is inclusive in the trek cost, and thus, our team arranges this permit once you book the trek with us.

We may ask you for a digital copy of your passport, a photo, and a few details for the permits. Once the permits are issued, you’ll receive a copy of them. At every checkpoint, your trek guide verifies the permits.

For solo trekkers, this permit is available at the Tourism Board in Kathmandu and Pokhara. For details, please check our ACAP Permit blog.

Trek Difficulty

Almost all the treks in Annapurna Sanctuary are moderately difficult. However, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with Ghandruk is the easiest among all. The short trek distance, low elevation, well-established trek route, and ample tea houses make it an ideal trek for everyone. Moreover, there are very few steep ascents that are manageable at a steady pace.

For beginners, families with kids, and senior adventurers, this five-day adventure offers a front-row-seat panorama of the Annapurna mountains without breaking a sweat. Anyone with decent physical fitness can comfortably complete this trek.

Who can join?

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with an overnight in Ghandruk is an easy trek that most trekkers can join. The low elevation, shorter distance route, ample tea houses, and safe trekking routes make it doable for most.

It is more of a viewpoint than a high-altitude destination trek. Because of this, the trek is accessible for every physically fit traveller. Whether it’s a beginner, a family with kids, a senior, or a landscape photographer, it fits all.

However, we advise the following people to consult with a doctor before embarking on this trek.

  • People with existing health issues and chronic illnesses
  • Kids below 5 years and seniors above 70 years.
  • Pregnant women

We have a detailed guide on Who Should Trek, providing detailed information on what goes into high-altitude trekking in Nepal and what it demands to be an efficient trekker. Also, it covers various topics, highlighting who should and shouldn’t trek.

Trek Gears to bring

Longer treks in Annapurna Sanctuary, like the 10-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek, require a significant amount of gear and clothes. It includes a sleeping bag, trekking poles, down jackets, crampons, and a bigger backpack.

As a trekker in the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with Ghandruk visit, you don’t need to carry a ton of trek gear and clothes. In this five-day trek, you’ll be walking for four days, from Birethanti to Ghandruk, and a jeep drive on the fifth day to Pokhara. Due to fewer walking days, shorter trek distances, and low elevation, you don’t need sleeping bags, thick down jackets, or bigger backpacks.

With a lightweight backpack, supported by a trek porter, you’ll have a comfortable trek experience.

How to prepare for Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Because it’s an easy trek doesn’t mean that you, as a trekker, don’t need to prepare for it. You still need adequate trek preparation before embarking on this trek. It is, however, plausible that you don’t need extensive training or top-notch physical fitness to complete the trek.

We recommend you start building fitness for at least a month before joining the trek. Cardio and leg strength are a must on the trek. And thus, you must build efficient cardio by:

  • Running
  • Cycling
  • Hiking
  • Swimming

For leg strength, walking for 2-3 hours a day for a month is highly recommended.

Other than physical fitness, you’ll need to pack trekking gear and clothes. For this, we’ll provide you with a detailed packing list for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek.

At NepTrek Adventures, all our Annapurna Sanctuary adventures start and end in Pokhara. One great benefit of starting the itinerary in Pokhara is that it shortens the overall trek. This gives you flexibility in Pokhara on the meals, extra stays, and travel plans around the city before/after the trek.

You can get to Pokhara by plane or bus from Kathmandu. This commute, however, isn’t included in the trek cost. But, if you want us to arrange your transportation between Pokhara and Kathmandu, we’d be more than happy to assist you.

Once we assess your travel plans, we’ll price you the exact add-ons.

No. Unless specified, any commute between Pokhara and Kathmandu isn’t included in the trek cost.

You have a choice of flying on a plane or taking a tourist bus between these two cities. For budget travel, the tourist bus would be ideal. However, for time-bound trekkers, a 25-minute flight between Kathmandu and Pokhara stands out.

We kindly request that you inform us about travel plans between Pokhara and Kathmandu. Our team will surely assist you in getting the flight/bus tickets.

You’ll get an airport pickup on arrival in Kathmandu.

From Pokhara, you’ll take a jeep drive to Birethanti. And on the 5th day, you’ll return from Ghandruk to Pokhara on a jeep.

We provide a private jeep from Pokhara to Birethanti for groups of at least two trekkers. However, a two-way private jeep will be provided for groups of three or more trekkers.

However, for a single trekker, we don’t provide a private jeep. Individual trekkers get a shared jeep ride to Birethanti and from Ghandruk to Pokhara.

For your convenience, we’ll provide you with a complimentary airport pickup upon arrival. Our representative will be at the Kathmandu airport to welcome you.

The airport drop-off on the departure date isn’t included in the trek cost. However, upon request, our team will surely arrange an airport drop-off. This, however, is subject to add-ons.

Kindly let us know if you prefer us to arrange airport drop-off.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with an overnight in  Ghandruk is a safe trek. The starting point, Birethanti, is accessible via a highway. So, there’s a faint chance that weather or road conditions will delay the itinerary or obstruct the drive.

Similarly, the road from Ghandruk to Birethanti, the weather won’t impact the road conditions much. The local committee has recently upgraded the road conditions, minimizing traffic disruptions during the rainy season.

If you’re planning this trek in July-August, there might be minor obstructions from Ghandruk to Birethanti due to landslides. However, for the rest of the year, you’ll experience a safe and comfortable ride.

100% safe.

The jeep from Pokhara to Birethanti and Ghandruk to Pokhara is totally safe. The drivers are experienced, the road conditions are great, and the jeeps are well-maintained. All these contribute to making the jeep ride safe.

The transport agency we work for in Pokhara employs experienced drivers. Moreover, they provide Mahindra 4-wheelers and Scorpios, which are best for comfort and additional safety.

We provide all mentioned transportations in “Cost Includes“. Hence, any transportation before and after the trek isn’t included in the trek cost.

However, we prioritize your comfort while you’re in Nepal. And thus, our team will assist you in arranging the transportation you’ll need post trek.

From our experience, our past clients often visited Chitwan after the trek. Also, many return to Kathmandu via flight. In these instances, our team helped our clients to have an easy commute.

Let us know if you have any additional travel plans in Nepal or if you need the commute organized. We’ll give you an appropriate quote for the add-on.

Accommodation and Meals

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek has some amazing lodges and tea houses. Because of this, you’ll have amazing accommodations throughout the trek.

The lodges at every place on this trek provide attached bathrooms, electricity, charging, Wi-Fi, etc.

You’ll get a twin bedroom with an attached bathroom at most places, except Tadapani. Your stay at Ulleri, Ghorepani, Ghandruk, and Pokhara comes with an attached bathroom.

Yes. Every tea house on this trek provides a hot shower.

Most lodges use gas geysers, while very few use solar-powered hot showers. Some in Ulleri, Ghorepani, and Ghandruk have hot showers attached to the room. While most have a separate hot shower room, accessible to every trekker.

Note: Unless specified, trekkers are required to pay for hot showers, which the trek cost doesn’t cover.

Yes. Tea houses in Ulleri, Ghorepani, and Ghandruk have attached bathrooms. However, in Tadapani, few tea houses have attached bathrooms and thus, are subject to availability during peak trek season.

You’ll be accommodated in a twin room with attached toilets in Ulleri, Ghorepani, and Ghandruk. Also, in Ghorepani and Ghandruk, you’ll get a hot shower included in the bathroom.

Yes. Most lodges and tea houses provide high-speed WiFi to the trekkers staying overnight. The wifi costs USD 3-4 per device. However, at some places, the lodges provide free wifi to the trekkers.

If you prefer cellular data, you can get a Nepali SIM card. At most places on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, the mobile data works fine.

Yes. Tea houses along the Ghorepani Poon Hill route are electricity-powered. Thus, the trekkers can charge their electronic devices during their stay at the tea houses. However, the electricity recharge costs USD 2-3 per device. Moreover, the recharging ports are often limited to the dining area only.

So, we suggest you hand electronic devices to your guide if you need them charged. As everyone recharges their devices in the dining, oftentimes, the devices get misplaced.

The tea houses on this trek are among the best mountain lodges in Nepal. Moreover, most landmarks of this trek are accessible by road, allowing lodges to bring fresh produce frequently. Thus, this allows them to serve hygienic, fresh, and an array of meals and drinks.

You’ll find most Western meals, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

The tea houses serve breakfast sets that come with 4-5 items. For example, a go-to breakfast includes Sherpa bread or toast, omelette, muesli, milk, etc. Pancakes are also a great choice for breakfast.

The lunch and dinner meals include stew, dumplings, noodles, pizza, sandwiches, fries, fried rice, and much more. We suggest you eat Dal Bhat for at least a day to fuel the long day walks. It’s a complete staple of the Nepali diet, popular for lunch and dinner.

You’ll also have many dessert choices.

Absolutely. A vegetarian trekker won’t have any issue getting the desired vegetarian meal from the menu. Actually, more trekkers go vegetarian during the trek to avoid eating meat. This minimizes the risk of bloating, food poisoning, and indigestion.

We kindly request that you provide us with your meal preference on the trek. We’ll notify the tea houses regarding the diets and meal choices before the trek.

100% safe.

The tea houses provide safe drinking water for trekkers, guides, and porters. Mostly, the cold water is filled from a running water tap, which is safe to drink. However, it contains high minerals. This water for trekkers often causes stomachaches. But guides and porters are used to drinking such water.

In such cases, trekkers use water purification tablets for water safety. Moreover, the tea houses sell filtered cold water and boiled drinking water at $1-2 per liter.

Trek Preparation & Fitness

The good news is that Ghorepani Ghandruk isn’t a difficult trek. And thus, you don’t need to build an athlete-level fitness for this trek. If you can walk for 2-3 hours without concerns, breathe fine, and are in good health, this trek is for you.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is among the easy short treks in Nepal. The straightforward route, trail markings, short trek distance, and ample lodges make it an easy trek to do.

Because of the easy trek grade, this 5-day adventure is ideal for physically fit novice trekkers who’re seeking a maiden Himalayan experience.

No. You don’t need prior trek experience to embark on this picturesque adventure. Instead, it’s an ideal beginner trek.

For a better trek experience, beginner trekkers are advised to trek with a licensed guide. At NepTrek Adventures, we’ve helped many novice trekkers complete this trek. Our experienced guides, friendly porters, and expertly designed itinerary make your trek an amazing experience.

Yes. Children above 5 years and the elderly below 65 years can embark on this adventure.

It’s an easy, straightforward trek with very few steep ascents. This makes it relatively easy to trek on.

Said this, physical fitness is a must. We don’t encourage you to join the trek if you have existing health conditions, unless cleared by your doctor.

No. Ghorepani, Poon Hill, and Ghandruk are in the mid-hills region. The highest elevation on this trek is Poon Hill at 3,210 meters, which isn’t a significant high altitude.

Hence, trekkers here don’t experience altitude sickness or any altitude-related issues. This makes it an amazing adventure without breaking a sweat much.

To embark on this trek, you’ll need good physical fitness. And to achieve that, you’ll need:

  • Hike 3-4 times before joining the trek
  • climbing stairs in the gym
  • cycling for efficient cardio

Doing these exercises for at least 1-2 months before joining the trek is highly recommended.

The total distance of the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is between 40 and 45 kilometers. In this five-day trek, you’ll trek for 4 days, and on the fifth day, you’ll take a jeep ride to Pokhara.

On average, you’ll trek at least 8-10 kilometers each day on the trek. It takes 5-7 hours to complete the walk. The short walking days are from Ulleri to Ghorepani and Tadapani to Ghandruk. The longest one is the Ghorepani-Tadapani route.

The trekking route isn’t rugged, which makes the trek comfortable. Most sections of the route pass through the mid-hill region, through the oak and pine forest.

At NepTrek Adventures, we prioritize your safety. Hence, if you feel unwell or get too tired at any point on the trek, you’ll be taken care of.

Our guides coordinate a helicopter rescue if you get seriously ill. However, for minor injuries, you’ll get first aid treatment and a visit to the local health post for a checkup on availability.

If you get tired and need a rest day, you’ll either have to add additional days or shorten the itinerary. This will be evaluated as per the situation.

Yes. Unless a trek porter is assigned for you, you must carry your backpacks.

We usually provide trek porters for two or more trekkers. So, for individual trekkers, we don’t provide a trek porter.

Ghandruk via Ghorepani Poon Hill is a 5-day short trek. Hence, you don’t need a ton of clothes and gear. And with fewer clothes and gear, carrying a backpack won’t be strenuous.

Health and Trek Safety

Yes. This trek is extremely safe for female trekkers, whether you are in a group or trekking solo. It’s a popular and well-established trekking route, which makes it very safe for all trekkers. The best part of this route is that it passes through many amazing, welcoming villages. Also, as a popular trek, you’ll encounter some trekkers, even during the off-season.

Trekking with a team of highly experienced guides at NepTrek ensures your comfort, logistics, safety, and a handpicked itinerary throughout the trek. Moreover, we have some amazing female trek leaders best suited for female trekkers.

Absolutely. Our experienced team of guides and porters ensures your 100% safety throughout the trek. And safety is at our core.

Over the years, we’ve successfully completed 100% of our guided treks without our clients getting sick or injured on the trek. Moreover, we’ve guided various age groups of adventurers while maintaining a safety record.

This outlines how safe our trips are and how committed we are to this matter.

Every decision throughout your adventure prioritizes safety. And if things don’t look good, we make decisions to keep you safe and sound.

No. The highest elevation on this trek is 3,210 meters at Poon Hill. You’ll trek here on the 3rd morning to view the sunrise. So, with a gradual two-day slow-paced trek, your body acclimates properly.

However, in recent years, many trekkers have skipped staying at Ulleri and trek directly to Ghorepani. This often leads to altitude sickness, which we don’t recommend you do.

At NepTrek Adventures, we complete this trek in five days, starting at Birethanti and walking to Ghandruk. We let you enjoy the serene nature walk and spectacular mountain view without the risk of altitude sickness.

Even though it’s very unlikely, we still don’t rule out the risk of altitude sickness.

If you get altitude sickness or food poisoning, our guide follows a standard procedure.

Here’s our procedure for altitude sickness.

– Monitoring the health and symptoms.
– Rest for an additional day at the same elevation to relieve the symptoms.
– If symptoms worsen, coordinate for a helicopter rescue or rapid descent.

Our team ensures your safety throughout the trek by monitoring your health, rehydration, sleep, and performance each day.

Yes. Travel insurance with emergency helicopter rescue coverage is a must for this trek. Although it’s among the safest and easy trek in Nepal, it’s still an outdoor activity. Due to this, it still brings risks of injuries and altitude sickness.

Health emergencies can endanger you on the trek. Despite being accessible by road, it’s all off-road and takes hours to reach the jeep points. This risk, however, can be eliminated by purchasing travel insurance.

Comprehensive travel insurance with helicopter evacuation gets an on-time rescue anywhere on the trek. Moreover, the travel insurance covers hospital and medical bills, saving you thousands of dollars.

We suggest that you provide us with proof of your travel insurance plan once you book this trek with us. During emergencies, we’ll be able to coordinate for rescue and repatriation using the insurance policy.

Yes. We provide a comprehensive first-aid kit to our guides on every trek. On top, trek guides at NepTrek are wilderness first-aid responders. So, during minor injuries, you’ll get a proper first-aid treatment.

First-aid kit includes basic medications, bandages, sprays, etc. However, for personal preferences and use, we recommend you bring one too. Your first-aid box can include personal medications and prescriptions alongside basic kits.

It depends on the kind of illness and medication the person is on.

People with well-managed and non-serious illnesses can embark on this trek and complete it without having significant issues. However, for severe illness and medications, we don’t encourage embarking on this trek. The long walking days, 3,210 meters’ landmark, outdoor with steep ascents and descents, all can be risky.

In short, consult with your doctor regarding the suitability. If your doctor clears for the trek, you should be good to book the trek.

Our guides are experts in weather patterns, know the best tea houses en route, and are familiar with the people in local villages.

All of our trekking guides are licensed and Nepal government-authorized professionals. We only employ licensed trekking guides to ensure your utmost safety throughout the trek. Moreover, with our licensed trek guides leading the treks, we comply with the legal requirements.

Most trekking guides at NepTrek Adventures have more than five years of high-altitude trekking and guiding experience. Over the years, our amazing guides have led a handful of adventurers to different trekking destinations in Nepal.

For your five-day Ghorepani and Poon Hill Trek, you’ll get an experienced guide who has guided in the region many times. A region-specific, experienced guide surely makes your trek safe, comfortable, insightful, and one-of-a-kind.

Yes. All trekking guides at NepTrek Adventures are excellent English speakers. Hence, during the trek, you’ll have a seamless conversation with your trek guide.

At NepTrek, we believe that fluent communication gives trekkers an amazing opportunity to connect with the adventure. For example, a fluent English-speaking guide can provide tips and insights about nature, people, culture, and mountains. Also, trekking guides bridge the communication between you and the locals if you want to interact with them.

With our fluent English-speaking guides, you’ll have an amazing experience during the trek.

Usually, we provide a trek porter for groups of at least two or more trekkers. However, for solo trekkers, we assign a trek porter with add-ons.

For this short trek, you probably won’t need a trek porter because of fewer trek gears and clothing. Said so, we still provide you with a trek porter to carry your backpacks.

Please note that on this trek, you can assign an 8 kg backpack to the porter. However, for additional weights, you must carry or pay extra for a porter.

Our trek porters kindly carry an 8 kg backpack for each trekker, and generally, one porter assists two trekkers. We suggest keeping the combined backpack weight under 16 kilograms to ensure everyone’s comfort.

Unlike many trekking agencies that may assign porters heavier loads, at NepTrek, we truly care for our team. That’s why we practice a fair porter policy, assigning weights within what we consider a comfortable and respectful limit.

We request you not to bring many clothes and gear, as Ghorepani and Poon Hill are just a five-day trek. However, if you want a private porter or want a porter to carry your stuff entirely, let us know. We’ll organize the logistics that fit your requirements.

The number of trek guides and porters depends on the group size. We provide an experienced trek guide in a group of at least five trekkers. However, for larger groups, we assign experienced assistant guides as needed.

Regarding the trek porters, we assign one porter to two trekkers. Occasionally, our trek porters also work as assistant guides in big groups.

Yes. All our trekking guides are Wilderness First Aid certified. This means that our guides have a comprehensive 30-hour wilderness first-aid training. This makes our guide self-sufficient in handling minor injuries and other health issues on the trek.

Having first-aid-certified trek leaders ensures utmost safety on every trip. And on your five-day trek to Ghorepani and Ghandruk, we’ll send you with our first-aid-certified and experienced guide.

Our trekking guides are true travel companions, cultural ambassadors, and professionals. They’re experienced high-altitude guides with years of guiding experience. They’ll take care of you throughout the trek. They’ll ensure that you remain fit, eat well, take adequate rest, and comply with the trekking etiquette. They’ll help you on every step of the trek so that you’ll be able to complete the trek comfortably.

Tipping guides and porters at the end of the trek is a generous way of appreciating their hard work in making your trip successful. Pokhara is where this trek ends, and here, all the trekkers tip their guides and porters with a farewell dinner.

Tipping is a personal thing, and thus, it depends on how well your trek experience with the crew was.

Trekkers in a group usually tip collectively, whereas some even prefer tipping personally as well.

Again, as this is personal, we let you figure it out. Gratitude can’t be measured.

Backpacking & Trek Gears

Since the trek is short, you don’t need to bring a bigger backpack. And if you’re trekking with a porter assisting with your backpack, you’ll need a light daypack to carry essential items.

A 30-litre daypack will be sufficient. For Porter, we’ll provide you with a waterproof duffel bag. You can pack most of your stuff in a duffel bag throughout the trek and return it once the trek is completed.

In your daypack, put essentials like travel documents, gadgets, snacks, and a down jacket. The duffel bag carries clothes, trek gear, and all other stuff.

Yes. If you’re in a group of at least two and more trekkers, you’ll get a trek porter. A trek porter is shared between two trekkers with a combined weight of 16 kilograms. The porter won’t carry any additional weight without add-ons. Hence, we recommend that you bring essential trekking gear and clothes.

We’ll provide you with a comprehensive packing list for the Ghorepani and Poon Hill Trek after you book the trek with us.

A sleeping bag would be a bonus, but it isn’t necessary on this trek. Even during the colder months, you’ll get warm overnight at the lodges.

The tea houses along this trek route provide a warm bed and blankets. Moreover, it’s not a high-elevation trek, which even in the cold months doesn’t get extremely cold or freezing.

As stated, carrying a sleeping bag won’t be any burden. However, on this trek, we don’t mark it as essential gear.
