What is the Everest Three High Pass Trek?

Everest Three High Passes or Everest Circuit Trek are the trekker’s favorite adventure destination. Formed by the erosion of glaciers or glacial streams, the high passes of Everest are over 5,300 meters.

The three high passes in Everest are Kongma La at 5,535 meters, Renjo La at 5,340 meters, and Cho La at 5,420 meters. In 18 days, you’ll fly to Lukla, trek to three high passes, and trek to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes.

Thus, for high-altitude trekkers, crossing these passes is the ultimate adventure in the Himalayas. The awe close-up sight of the world’s highest mountains from the passes makes the trek wholesome.

Why Everest Three Passes Trek in 2024?

Gifted with abundant natural aesthetics, every corner of the Everest region is captivating. And as an adventurer, exploring the place can be a lifetime experience.

Exploring the region on multiple occasions won’t be possible for many. Also, the cost of multiple treks here can get very expensive. However, if you have 18 days to trek, at just USD 1850, you’ll complete this ultimate adventure in the Everest region.

Here, we’ve detailed why Everest Three High Pass Trek in 2024 is still the best high-altitude trekking in Nepal.

Everest Base Camp- The ultimate landmark

Embarking on Everest Three Passes Trek takes you to Everest Base Camp, the ultimate landmark of high-altitude trekking. It sits at 5,364 meters, making it the highest base camp. Hence, trekking here for once in a lifetime is a rewarding experience. And on Mt. Everest Three High Pass Trek, you’ll reach the base camp of Mt. Everest on the 9th day.

After crossing Kongma La, you’ll trek to Lobuche, Gorak Shep, and the base camp.

Standing atop the base camp and the landmark stone, you’ll get a beautiful view of Everest’s summit. Moreover, Nuptse appears very close to the base camp. Also, the surrounding mountain panorama makes the base camp a true haven of mountains.

Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La- Everest’s Three High Passes

Kongma La is the first pass you’ll trek, and Renjo La is the last one. And while trekking from Everest Base Camp to Gokyo Lakes, you’ll cross Cho La Pass.

The beauty of the Everest Three High Pass Trek is that you’ll do a complete Everest trek instead of just trekking to the base camp or Gokyo Lakes. And that too in adventurous style, trekking over a humungous 5,545 meters.

Crossing Kongma La from Chhukung offers a surreal view of Ama Dablam, Island Peak, Lhotse, and Cholatse. Also, the walk over the glacier for most sections makes the journey adventurous.

Renjo La Pass offers the wholesome 360˚ panoramic Everest range and Rolwaling Valley. And from Cho La Pass, you’ll get a clear picture of Cho Oyu, the 10th-highest mountain.

Gokyo Lakes- Turquoise freshwater lakes

Gokyo is the most elegant and alive-like landmark in the Everest region. It’s more of a freshwater lake, mountain panorama, and greenery. It sits on the east shore of turquoise Gokyo Lake, next to Ngozumpa glacier, and close to Cho Oyu, the 10th highest mountain.

You'll stop at a tea house in Chhukung for lunch, dinner, and overnight accommodation.

Climbing Kongma La Pass, at 5,540 meters, will be the first among the Everest Three Passes we trek. Closing the distance to Lobuche also means that we are approaching Everest.

After breakfast at a tea house in Chhukung, you'll start the trek along the rocky terrain towards Kongma La. We'll continue our hike to Kongma La, following the route west to Chhukung. We'll reach Pokalden Base Camp following the small, rocky, and gentle climb. Another climb from Pokalden is arduous as we have to hike through the glacier and on the cliffs.

Crossing the Pass over 5,540 meters will be more tiring than previous hikes. It takes around four hours to scale the top of Kongma La Pass. The higher elevations and steep climb of Kongma La are rewarding with scenic mountain panorama. The scenic view from its top includes Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Khumbu Glacier, and more.

You'll descend to Lobuche. From Kongma La, the sharp descent takes you to Khumbu Glacier near Lobuche.

You'll settle in at Oxygen Lodge for overnight accommodation.

After breakfast at the tea house, you'll leave Lobuche to go to Gorak Shep.

The trek is easy till the Pyramid. However, past the glacier moraine, the walk becomes arduous.

There aren't any uphill sections between Lobuche and Gorak Shep. However, due to the high-altitude region with thin air, every step on the trek becomes challenging. However, the panoramic view of Mt. Pumori, Changatse, and Nuptse makes the walk beautiful.

Upon reaching Gorak Shep, you'll leave the backpacks in the tea house. With a packed lunch, you'll go to the base camp.

The distance between Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp is 3.5 km. It takes two hours to trek to the base camp from Gorak Shep.

You'll cross a few streams and ascend to Dzongla.

You'll settle in at Hotel Maison Sherpa for overnight accommodation.

Trekking from Dzongla to Cho La Pass takes 2.5 to 3 hours. And to trek down to Thangnak from Cho La Pass takes two hours.

The adventurous walk of the day starts at 6 am after breakfast at the tea house in Dzongla.

You'll trek adjacent to Mt. Cholatse and elegant Ama Dablam on the backdrop. For an hour from Dzongla, you'll trek on almost-flat-like terrain.

The first arduous section of Cho La is climbing a small 50-meter-tall ridge. Past the ridge, you'll trek along the small stream of Cho La. Further, one small glacier moraine climb takes you to the main section of Cho La Pass. Here, you must use the crampons to walk safely over the ice.

The main glacier section takes 30 minutes to cross. However, with snow and ice, crossing this section could take up to an hour.

The final section before the Cho La Pass top is arduous. Here, you've to trek by grabbing the fixed rope.

Once you reach the Cho La top, the best mountain panorama rewards you. The unmatched sense of accomplishment of conquering Cho La Pass gives you joy and excitement.

The descent from Cho La top is difficult as on most sections, where you need to grab the fixed rope. Also, the loose and slippery trail makes the downwalk challenging.

Once you reach the pasture land, the trek becomes easier. You'll trek for an hour from the pasture land to Thangnak.

You'll settle in at Hotel Tashi Friendship at Thangnak for overnight accommodation.

We'll be resting till late morning at Thangnak before leaving for Gokyo.

After a nutritious breakfast at Thongnak, we'll start the trek to Gokyo.

The most adventurous part of today's trek is crossing Ngozumpa Glacier. It's the largest glacier in the Himalayas of Nepal.

As you navigate through the glacier, you'll see Mt. Cho Oyu, the tenth-highest mountain. Before entering the Gokyo Valley, you'll climb a 100-meter ridge. After climbing, the serene Gokyo Lakes appear.

The tea houses in Gokyo sit east of Dudh Pokhari, the largest Gokyo Lake.

You'll settle in at Eco Lodge in Gokyo. First thing, you'll grab the lunch straight away.

With the best lake view, sleeping overnight in Gokyo Lakes becomes a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Climbing Gokyo Ri is strenuous due to the thin air and steep ascends. However, the panoramic viewing experience from the top of this viewpoint is rewarding.

At 4 am, you'll start the hike to Gokyo Ri. The entire valley remains calm and serene in the early morning. However, as you reach the mid-way of Gokyo Ri, the sunrise lights the entire valley. Particularly, Mt. Cho Oyu becomes spectacular with the golden sunrise colors.

From Gokyo Ri, you'll get a 360 panoramic view of the entire valley including the beautiful sight of Mt. Everest. Furthermore, the scintillating turquoise freshwater Gokyo Lakes leave you in awe. The spectacular view of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Lobuche, Tawoche, etc. from Gokyo Ri offers an unmatched experience.

After viewing the sunrise and spending quality time at Gokyo Ri, you'll trek to the tea house for breakfast.

With breakfast, you'll rest at the tea house for the day. After lunch, you'll visit Gokyo Fourth Lake.

You'll return to the tea house during the evening, grab dinner, and take a sound sleep.

After leaving Gokyo with breakfast in the early morning, you'll trek along the banks of Gokyo Lake. Once you reach the lake's end, you'll start the gradual ascend.

The almost vertical climb for 30 minutes takes you to flat terrain. On this terrain, you'll trek for another 30 minutes. However, the route winds through the moraines of glaciers with gradual ascent.

For 30 minutes, you'll take an arduous climb on a rock-fall-prone area, right below the Renjo La top. You must be quick and attentive, as the occasional rock fall may cause issues.

Once you reach Renjo La Pass top, you'll get the amazing panorama, a 360˚ view of Everest, Gokyo, and Rolwaling Valley. From the top, the surreal view of turquoise Gokyo Lake, Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lobuche, Makalu, and others blows you away.

The descent from Renjo La Pass is easy. The national park has made stone stairs from the top to a lake at the bottom of the pass. Once you trek past the lake, you'll walk on an extremely serene route for one hour.

Edging Nangpa La Valley, you'll start the descent to Lungden. Some sections are steep, whereas some are easy. However, the entire journey will be panoramic and peaceful.

Upon reaching Lungden, you'll settle in at Three Passes Lodge for lunch and overnight accommodation.

After breakfast at the tea house, you'll leave Lungden for Namche Bazaar. The beautiful glimpse of Kongde Ri inspires the all-day-long trek.

Leaving Lungden, you'll cross a few streams and a river. Subsequently, trek to Thameteng. Thameteng is a beautiful Sherpa settlement with a rich history in mountaineering and legends.

You'll trek 20 minutes more from Thameteng to Thame. With the recent glacier outburst, a small part of Thame has been impacted. But you'll take an alternative route from Thame to a bridge down the river,

You'll descend for 20 minutes, cross a bridge, and trek to Thamo for lunch.

From Thamo, you'll trek for two more hours to Namche Bazaar.

Throughout the trail, you'll see Buddhist prayer flags, wheels, and chhortens. With fewer trekkers en route, the walk will be peaceful.

You'll settle in at Hotel Everest in Namche.

Trekking from Namche to Lukla feels like forever as you'll edge to the end of the successful Everest Three Passes Trek. But for the most part, you'll descend. Hence, there'll be less fatigue during the 6-hour-long walk.

For lunch, you'll stop at a tea house in Phakding.

A three-hour gradual walk from Phakding takes you to Lukla. The joy of reaching Lukla gives you a sense of accomplishment, a reward.

Transportation, Flights, and Delays

The flight to Lukla from Kathmandu or Ramechhap airport depends on when you do this trek.

For example, in 2024, most flights were from Kathmandu to Lukla until September 20. However, from September 20 to December 1, 95% of flights are scheduled to operate from Manthali airport. It's due to the trekking season.

The Spring season starts in March and ends in late May. Likewise, the autumn season starts from mid-September to late November. During this time, more than 300-400 trekkers fly to/from Lukla. And given the air traffic and Lukla's unpredictable weather, the flights often get delayed and postponed for days.

Hence, the flights to Lukla operate from Manthali airport to efficiently manage the busy flight schedule.

You'll get a private/shared vehicle drive from Kathmandu to Manthali airport. It's usually midnight when you'll leave Kathmandu to Ramechhap.

Our representative will pick you up on a private/shared vehicle (jeep) from the hotel. It'll be a six-hour drive along the B.P. Highway.

With breakfast at the restaurant, you'll take the flight to Lukla in the morning.

For a detailed guide, please check out our blog, Kathmandu to Ramechhap: A Trip to Manthali Airport.

With recent weather developments, flight delays in Lukla are becoming quite common in Autumn. The late summer rain until the end of September causes flight delays and cancelations. However, past mid-October till December, the weather remains excellent for the flights.

In Spring, the flights to Lukla operate on time. Except at the end of May, from late February to mid-May, the weather remains crisp for flight landing and takeoff at Lukla.

For now, please keep in mind that flight delays are common when you're flying to Lukla.

Usually, in a worst-case scenario, flight cancelation during the season can go for 4 days straight. Recently, all the flights from 13-17th October 2024 to Lukla from Manthali airport have been canceled due to bad weather at Lukla and Manthali.

We recommend you plan Everest Three Passes Trek with at least two buffer days. With two buffer days, you can plan alternatives while waiting for the flight.

The appropriate solution would be to wait for the weather to improve and fly to Lukla. However, if you wish to fly to Lukla on a helicopter, you'll have to pay, partially compensated by the flight ticket refund.

If your flight from Kathmandu to Lukla gets canceled, you can plan the Kathmandu Sightseeing Tour during the buffer days. Once you complete the tour and the weather clears, you'll fly to Lukla.

Another option would be to take a jeep drive from Kathmandu/Manthali to Salleri and Thamdanda. And from Thamdanda, you'll trek for two days to Phakding and start the trek.

All airlines to Lukla allow trekkers to bring 15 kg weighing luggage. However, for luggage weighing more than 15 kg, the airlines charge up to Rs. 150-200 per kg.

Thus, we suggest you bring a backpack weighing 15 kg or less.

For complete information about the permits, check out our Everest Base Camp Trek Permits.

The Everest Base Camp Trek permit allows you to trek in the entire Everest region, except for climbing the peaks and mountains.

However, you can't reuse the permit once you check out the trek permits from the trekker's checkpost in Monjo and Lukla.

Note: The heated blanket costs USD 15 per night.

Yes. The drinking water during the trek is safe to drink, and even the running water from the tap is safe to drink. However, you can use water purification tablets or filters to make the water safer.

If you prefer drinking hot water, you can buy and refill the boiled drinking water at the tea houses. You can buy a cup, a small pot, or a liter of boiled drinking water.

Health and Safety

Your trekking guide assesses the situation first if you get altitude sickness during the trek.

Based on the situation, we'll perform:

-  Take a day's rest and resume the trek ( basic symptoms)

-  Gradual descent to lower altitude (mild symptoms)

-  Rapid descent by helicopter rescue (severe symptoms like HACE and HAPE)

Note: You must bring a valid travel insurance policy with helicopter rescue coverage.

No. Our trek guides don't carry oxygen supplements during the trek. Logistically and financially, carrying an oxygen cylinder on a trek is challenging. The tea houses we accommodate during the trek provide supplemental oxygen when needed.

Instead, we do our best to keep you safe and free from altitude sickness during the trek.

Absolutely. The acclimatization during the trek is to ensure adequate adaptation to the altitude.

On this 15-day trek, you'll rest for a day at Namche and Dingboche. Namche is 3,440 meters, and Dingboche is 4,410 meters. These altitudes are perfect for a day of rest that ensures utmost acclimatization.

During acclimatization in Namche, you'll visit Hotel Everest View. And in Dingboche, you'll trek to Nangkartshang Peak. These viewpoints offer a panoramic glimpse of the world's highest mountains and proper acclimatization.

There are few hospitals en route to the base camp and Gokyo. However, they are basic and provide minor high-altitude sickness and other associated treatments.

A hospital in Lukla is more sophisticated. However, others in the region are just basic clinics. There's a clinic in Namche Bazaar. Moreover, there's a basic hospital in Pheriche. Likewise, in Gokyo, there's a clinic that provides basic treatment.

Hence, a helicopter evacuation is necessary if you get significant injuries during the trek.

No. Almost all the trekking routes of Everest Three High Pass Trek are safe to trek. The entire route is void of landslides, avalanches, and floods. However, the ascend of Kongma La and the final climb of Renjo La are a bit steep with active glaciers and rock falls.

With our experienced trekking guide, you'll cross these sections safely.

If you have travel insurance with helicopter rescue coverage up to 5,600 meters, you'll get a one-time helicopter rescue. The highest elevation profile on the Everest Three Passes Trek is 5,600 meters.

If you fail to purchase or provide us with proof of travel insurance, you may not get the helicopter on time. High-altitude rescue in the Everest region is expensive, and helicopter companies hesitate to rescue clients who don't have travel insurance.

Yes. You'll get a trek porter for the trek.

We allocate one porter to two trekkers to carry a combined weight of 20-25 kg only. Thus, we advise you to bring the essential trek gear only. In this way, you can make the backpack lighter.

If the combined weight exceeds 25 kg, you must pay USD 10 per day for extra weight.

The number of trek guides depends on the group size.

Usually, we allocate one group leader and an assistant guide for a group of 6-10 pax. However, we allocate one senior trek guide with plenty of guiding experience for a group of six or lower.

Note: The trek porters will also assist the group if needed.

Yes. We buy insurance for our trek guides and porters. The insurance includes helicopter evacuation, medication, and hospitalization expenses incurred during the trek.

At the end of the trek, in Lukla, you must tip to your trek guide and porter. There's no regulation for the amount of tip. However, everyone tip at least 10% of the trek cost to the guide and porter. Usually, USD 10 per day is a common practice among trekkers in the Everest region.

While trekking in a group, we allocate the guides and porters as per the group size. Thus, it will be challenging to provide you with a private guide and porter in a group. Moreover, hiring an individual guide and porter will be expensive as well.

Hence, if you want a guide and porter, we recommend you book a private trek with us.
