Before we dive into the flight details, cost, and more, we’d like to introduce a bit of Lukla Airport.

Lukla Airport aka Tenzing-Hillary Airport

You should know that Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary were the first people to ever climb the world’s highest mountain, Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest). Lukla, being the gateway to Everest, has an airport. Thus, to honor the first Everest summiteer, the airport got its name, Tenzing-Hillary Airport.

Lukla Airport is among the scariest airports in the world. It sits at 2,860 meters, the runway just 527 meters long, with a technical approach and almost no go-around. Still, it gets super-busy during the trekking season with more than 100 flights, all day long, all successful.

The weather conditions affect the flights at Lukla Airport. Usually, the fog and overcast cause flight delays and subsequent flight cancelations. However, during the peak trekking season, with all-day flights on a clear weather day, close to 500 trekkers enter the Everest region.

The airlines that provide Kathmandu to Lukla flight services are Tara Air, Sita Air, and Summit Air. These airlines use DHC-6 Twin Otter, and Dornier Do 228. These planes are reliable for difficult runaway conditions, as they cut the risks in take-offs and landings.

Manthali Airport: No Flights from Kathmandu to Lukla during the season

Due to heavy aviation traffic in Kathmandu during the trekking season, all the flights to Lukla operate from Manthali Airport. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal made this policy effective on October 1, 2023. Since then, during April-May and October-December, flights from Kathmandu to Lukla operate to Manthali to Lukla.

The reasons for this operational shift:

  • Heavy air traffic in Kathmandu: Being an only international airport, Kathmandu Airport operates multiple domestic and international flights. More flights have resulted in traffic jams in the air. It’s why Manthali Airport operates to increase the on-time departure of Lukla flights.
  • Too many trekkers: There are more people visiting the Everest region, which results the more flight demand. Kathmandu Airport already has a lot on its plate. So, Manthali Airport allows more access to the Lukla with shorter flight times than from Kathmandu.

Due to this shift, you must take a drive from Kathmandu to Manthali. It takes around five hours to complete the road trip to Manthali. Thus, you need to make sure that you leave Kathmandu on time. Usually, trekkers start the drive at midnight and catch the flight in the morning.
