Before deciding whether this trek is for you or not, let’s take a quick look at the three high passes in the Manaslu Annapurna Region. We’ve listed these passes based on their difficulty and altitude profile.

Annapurna Circuit Trek: Thorong La (5,416 meters)

Thorong La, or Thorong Pass, at 5,416 meters, is among the highest mountain pass in the Himalayas. It’s the highest point and noteworthy landmark in Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Everyone crosses this pass in east-west fashion for safety and a more comfortable trek. With us, you’ll start the trek from Thorong Base Camp in Manang, trek to Thorong La, and down to Muktinath in Mustang in a single day.

Thorong La sits on the lap of Damodar Himal, north of all Annapurna mountains. Chulu West, Annapurna range, and Mt. Dhaulagiri are best visible on a clear weather day from Thorong La.

Also, it’s the last mountain pass you’ll cross on this trek before reaching Jomsom and Pokhara to end the trek.

Read our blog on Why Annapurna Circuit Trek in 2025 can be your best adventure in the Himalayas!

Nar Phu Trek: Kang La (5,320 meters)

Kang La Pass, at 5,320 meters, is among the highest and most panoramic mountain passes in the Himalayas. The elegant Annapurna mountains encircle this pass, making it an ideal viewpoint.

On Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek, Kang La is the second mountain you’ll cross. From the top of Kang La, you’ll descend to Ngawal and trek to Manang for Annapurna Circuit and Thorong La.

Unlike Thorong La and Larkya La, Kang La is ridge-like with almost no space at the top. Moreover, the descent from this pass is very steep due to the cross-sectional steep descent to Ngawal. Hence, your thighs get tired to some extent on the two-hour descent.

You’ll start the trek from Naar village, trek to Kang La base camp, ascend to Kang La, and descend to Ngawal.

Watch out for the rockfalls while descending from the pass.

Manaslu Circuit Trek: Larkya La (5,106 meters)

Larkya La sits over 5,106 meters in the Manaslu Conservation Area. It’s the highest point in Manaslu Circuit Trek. Also, it’s the longest pass in the Himalayas.

Crossing this pass isn’t difficult but can get boring. It’s the first mountain pass you’ll cross in this trek, and join the Annapurna Circuit Trek route in Dharapani. You must walk 6-7 hours to cross this pass from Dharmashala to Bimthang. Reaching the top of Larkya La isn’t as challenging as descending from its top to Bimthang.

Mt. Manaslu, Himlung Himal, Kang Koru, Annapurna II, and Ganesh Himal are beautiful mountains visible from Larkya La. Besides mountains, you’ll get a wholesome experience of walking over 5000 meters altitude.

24 days Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek Itinerary- Detailed Breakdown

After breakfast at the lodge, you'll take a shared jeep drive from Machha Khola to Bangsing.

You'll drive along Dovan and Jagat until the jeep stops at a suspension bridge to Philim. You'll cross the suspension bridge, trek to Philim, and stop for lunch. It is also where you've to enter your Manaslu Circuit Trek Permit.

The trek becomes beautiful as you walk along the river shore through pine and rhododendron forests and overhanging boulders.

After crossing Siyar Khola Bridge, you'll reach Lhokpa, where the route to Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley separates.

From here, you'll trek to Pewa, and after some 30 minutes, you'll reach today's destination, Deng.

You'll settle in at a tea house for dinner and overnight accommodation.

Walking along the serene bamboo forest in the morning, you'll cross a bridge and start the gradual ascend. A suspension bridge connects Deng and the route to Rana and Bihi Phedi.

The route past Rana and Bihi Phedi progresses through several landslide zones. Since these landslide zones often remain active during the rainy season, occasional rockfall also happens. Hence, you must be extra cautious and maintain a good pace, as your trek guide tells you.

2-3 hours of gradual ascend with a beautiful landscape view take you to Namrung. It's a beautiful settlement in Manaslu with ample luxury restaurants and cafes. A cup of cappuccino would be best after a hot shower at a tea house in Namrung.

After breakfast at the tea house at Namrung, you'll prepare for the trek to Lho Village. Also, today's the day you'll see Mt. Manaslu, the prominent attraction of Manaslu Trek.

Leaving Namrung, you'll reach Banjam. From Banjam, you'll walk through the fir and rhododendron forest. You'll eventually trek to two beautiful villages, Lihi and Sho.

Tibetan attires, monks, shortens, fine paintings, prayer flags, and the rocky hillside are some elements you'll experience this day. With a gradual walk, you'll reach Lho.

Settle in at a tea house for overnight accommodation.

Lho to Sama Gaun is the shortest day walk, just 4 hours, covering an 8 km long route.

The morning view of Mt. Manaslu from Lho starts your day with a wholesome vibe. And with breakfast, you'll start the trek.

Lho to Syala is an easy walk on the straightforward trail. You'll walk through pine forest and cross wooden bridges over the crystal clear streams. One and half hour walk from Shyala takes you to Sama Gaun.

Since it's a short day walk, you'll have lunch at a tea house in Sama Gaun.

As you near Sama Gaun, you won't see the mountains around. However, the beautiful valley, yak pastures, stupas, and whole settlement entices you.

Settle in at a tea house for overnight accommodation.

The first acclimatization in Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek is on this day. You'll visit Manaslu Base Camp as a part of the acclimatization hike. It''s almost a day-long walk, but it is worth it. You'll get proper acclimatization with the altitude on visiting the base camp.

With breakfast, you'll start the hike. Since it's a day-long walk, you'll carry a packed lunch in the backpack. Or your trek porter carries them for the day hike.

You'll walk on the glacier, visit the base camp, and trek to Birendra Lake—the panoramic view of the entire Sama Gaun from the base camp area is awe-struck.

Another popular day hike for acclimatization is Pungyen Gompa.

Overnight at a tea house in Sama Gaun.

Trek from Sama Gaun to Samdo takes 5 hours, covering a distance of just 8 km. It is among the short day trek and also the easier one. Also, the altitude difference isn't much.

You'll trek along the beautiful high-altitude landscape, leaving the alpine treeline at Sama Gaun. First, you'll climb a ridge, cross a wooden bridge over Budi Gandaki River, and trek to White Kani. It's a yak herding place in summer.

With the backdrop of the elegant Manaslu mountain, Samdo village has a picturesque setting. Once a Tibetan refugee village, it has become a popular destination among trekkers in Manaslu Circuit.

You'll settle in at a tea house for overnight accommodation.

Expect the trail to be steeper as you'll climb 750 meters altitude in 4 hours. You'll cover a 7 km distance between Samdo and Dharmashala.

The gradual trek from Samdo takes you to Larke Bazaar, a small town in the Himalayas. It used to be the trade hub between Tibet and the Manaslu region.

You'll trek further for two hours from Larke Bazaar to reach Dharamshala. It's a beautiful hamlet with a picturesque view of the mountain chain in the backdrop.

You'll settle in at a tea house for overnight accommodation.

On this day, you'll scale Larkya La, the first mountain pass of Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek. It's a long day of 8-9 hours of walking but is full of adventure and once-in-a-lifetime moments.

Unlike at 7 am, on this day, you'll start the trek around 3-4 am. Beginning the trek early in the morning ensures perfect weather at Larkya La.

The heavenly Larkya La offers a view of the few mountains of the region. Mt. Manaslu, Himlung Himal, Kang Garu, Annapurna II, and Cheo Himal are pleasingly visible on a clear weather day at the top.

An hour's downhill walk takes you to Bimthang, today's stopping place. En route to Bimthang, you'll see humungous glaciers, icefalls, and beautiful Ponkar Lake.

Note: Depending on the time of the trek, you may need to put ice spikes on your trekking boot if there's any snow/ice on the route.

On this day, you'll exit the Manaslu Conservation Area and enter the Annapurna Conservation Area in Tilje. The trek distance from Bimthang to Tilje is 18 km, and it takes 7 hours to complete the walk. Since most of this section is descending, you'll have a comfortable walk.

Once again, you'll feel the breeze of the Marshyangi River and the rustling of pine and juniper forest. The landscape appears more lively and green as you approach Tilje.

Overnight at the best available tea house at Tilje.

Trekking to Koto from Tilje sees you walking along the Annapurna Circuit Trek route. You'll trek along beautiful hamlets like Nadi, Danque, Timang, and Koto.

Koto is a beautiful hamlet in Manang, close to the district's headquarters, Chame. There are a handful of good-quality tea houses in Koto.

For most sections, you'll trek along the off-road with occasional jeeps passing by.

With lunch at Timang, you'll trek two hours further to Koto.

Settle in at a tea house for overnight accommodation.

From Koto, you'll trek to Meta for the Nar Phu Valley Trek with Kang La.

The trail between Koto and Meta is panoramic. It has cascading rivers, suspension bridges, mountain views, steep ascends, gorges, and serenity. Hence, you'll have wholesome walking.

You'll cross a suspension bridge over the Marshyangdi River and enter Nar Phu Valley, a restricted region in Annapurna. After some ascend, you'll reach Naga Fung. From here, you'll trek one hour to Chomcho Gufa and stop for lunch.

After lunch, you'll walk along the shore of Nar Khola. Past Dharmashala, the route to Meta gets steeper.

You'll settle in at a tea house at Meta.

Phu Gaon from Meta is 15 km, which takes around 7 hours to complete the walk. It may sound like a long-distance route but the panoramic view and sublime route won't make you feel tired.

After leaving Meta, you'll trek to Chyako and Kyang. You'll stop for lunch at Kyang.

Past Kyang, the route to Phu is scenic and easy, with the final 20-minute hard ascend to Phu gate.

Past Phu gate, you'll see withered houses, stupas, and mani walls. You'll cross a suspension bridge over the Naar River and trek to Phu.

Settle in at a tea house for overnight accommodation.

With breakfast in the morning, you'll stroll around Phu Gaon for sightseeing. You'll also hike for 20 minutes to Tashi Lhakhang Monastery, among the most ancient monasteries in the world.

After sightseeing and exploration, you'll prepare for the return to Nar Phedi. Phu to Nar Phedi is 17 km long. It takes 6 hours to complete the walk.

For lunch, you'll stop at Chyaku.

Past Chyaku, you'll descend to Nar Khola, cross Mahendra Bridge, and trek 20 minutes more to Nar Phedi Monastery. There is only one tea house run by the monastery that you'll accommodate overnight.

Nar Phedi to Nar is the shortest and steepest route on the Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek. The route is 6 km, and it takes 3 hours to complete.

The steep route starts right after leaving the tea house at Nar Phedi. However, after reaching the top of Nar Phedi, you'll get an elegant view of Pisang Peak. Also, the traditional stupas and Buddhist elements greet you warmly.

You'll trek 20 minutes to Nar Village from Nar Gate and settle in at a tea house.

The acclimatization at Nar Village gives you ample rest before approaching the Kang La.

There's not much to explore around Nar Village. But you can visit the farmlands on the base of Pisang Peak after lunch.

You can stroll around the alleys of the beautiful village during the evening.

You'll go to bed early at 8 pm as you'll start the Kang La walk in the early morning.

You'll start the trek at 4 am sharp after breakfast at 3:30 am.

The route to Kang La is straightforward to Kang La Base Camp. However, past this, the route starts getting steeper.

You'll climb a few ridges and snowblocks before reaching a flat-like region some hundred meters below the pass.

You'll reach Kang La around 10 am. With good weather, you'll be amazed at the surrounding Annapurna massifs.

Past Kang La, the route to Ngawal is a steep descent. Due to this, you'll experience tiredness in your legs.

You'll reach Ngawal in two hours from the Kang La top.

You'll settle in at a tea house for overnight accommodation.

With breakfast at a tea house, you'll leave Ngawal to Manang. The entire section is on the road, with occasional jeeps passing by.

The route from Ngawal descends to Mugji, from where you'll trek along the bank of Marshyangdi River. You'll trek further to Bragga, a 500-year-old ancient hamlet.

An hour's trek from Bragga takes you to a panoramic U-shaped Manang. It offers a great view of Humde village and airstrip, majestic Gangapurna, Annapurna II, Pisang Peak, and Tilicho Peak.

There is a load of quality tea houses in Manang. You'll settle in at the best available tea house.

Unlike an acclimatization day, for you, a day of stopping in Manang is for a complete rest.

A perfect rest day in Manang is all you need after conquering Manaslu Circuit and Nar Phu Valley Trek. Also, you'll be tired upon reaching Manang by crossing Kang La Pass.

After breakfast at the tea house, you'll visit Gangapurna Lake and the viewpoint. After sightseeing, you'll return to the tea house for lunch, dinner, and overnight accommodation.

During the day, you can have a hot shower, drink plenty of warm soups, and more.

The aesthetic Annapurna Circuit Trek opens up as you start the trek from Manang to Yak Kharka. The route often gets steeper and tiring, but the panoramic landscapes make you walk wholesome.

You'll trek past some Yak pasture lands before crossing Ghyanchang Khola. Past the bridge, the route is steeper, filled with juniper bushes.

A gradual walk of two hours takes you to today's destination, Yak Kharka. The word 'Yak Kharka' translates to Yak pasture land. Hence, you can expect yaks grazing and their calves dancing around.

Overnight at the tea house in Yak Kharka.

The 700-meter altitude gain from Yak Kharka to Thorong High Camp is exciting and tiring.

You'll leave Yak Kharka after breakfast at the tea house. Leaving Yak Kharka, you'll trek to Ledar, the last settlement of Manang. The winding trail offers a panoramic view of Annapurna, Gangapurna, Chulu, and Tilicho Peak.

Trekking from Ledar is not an all-ascending route. One hour from Ledar, and you'll descend to beautiful Kone Khola (River). From here, the zigzag route leads to Thorong High Camp.

You'll settle in at the best available tea house at Thorong High Camp.

To avoid the mid-day wind and possible bad weather, you'll start the trek at 4 am. The walk is steep on the glacier moraines and the streams coming from Thorong Peak.

You'll climb to the top within five hours of leaving Thorong High Camp.
From the top of Thorong La, you'll get a picturesque glimpse of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Damodar Himal, and other panoramic mountains.

The descent from Thorong La to Muktinath is steep. However, the grassy meadows and panoramic valley make your walk tireless.

Once you reach Muktinath, you'll take a taxi to Jomsom. You'll settle in at a lodge for overnight accommodation at Jomsom.

After breakfast at the lodge, you'll head to the airport for the Jomsom-Pokahra flight.

You'll fly above the beautiful landscape of Marpha, Jomsom, with a view of the elegant Annapurna massif.

At Pokhara airport, you'll get picked up by our representative. You'll get airport to hotel transfer in a private vehicle.

With the Pokhara-Kathmandu flight, your Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek ends.

Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek- Additional Trek Info

There are many things you must know about the trek before booking it. We have covered various topics like trek difficulty, best time, trek cost, travel insurance, trek safety, preparations, and more.

Trek Difficulty

Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek is an easy, moderate, and challenging grade trek. Let’s segment this long trek into individual trekking and their difficulty.

The comfortable sections are the lower altitudes. The walking routes in Lower Manaslu, Nar Phu, and Annapurna Circuit Trek are easy to trek. Stone-paved trails, off-roads, and through beautiful hamlets make the walk easy and engaging.

The moderate-grade routes are between the 3,500 meters and the high pass. The steeper sections, zigzag winding trail, and the rugged high-altitude terrain with thin oxygen make walking difficult.

Crossing mountain passes like Thorong La, Kang La, and Larkya La is challenging. What makes them demanding is the altitude of over 5000 meters. Moreover, the snowfall, ice, steeper descends, and unpredictable weather make crossing three passes challenging but rewarding.

Can a beginner join this trek?

No. A trek like this for a beginner is very challenging. Trekking like Manaslu Circuit Trek, Annapurna Circuit Trek, or Nar Phu Valley Trek are doable by novice trekkers. However, all three combined on a single go can get extremely tiring and un-doable.

Trekkers walk 7-8 hours every day on the trek on the most rugged high-altitude terrain. Not to mention, they cross three mountain passes over 5000 meters, which itself is difficult.

If you want to embark on this trek, we suggest you join our short and easy treks like Langtang Gosaikunda Trek and Everest Base Camp Trek.

Altitude Sickness

We’ve planned the Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek itinerary wisely so that clients don’t get tired and don’t get altitude sickness. Moreover, for adequate rest and adaptation, we provide two days for acclimatization, one during the Manaslu Circuit Trek and another during the Nar Phu Valley Trek.

Said so, the high-altitude terrain is unpredictable. Even after taking proper care and rehydration, you may get altitude sickness.

The signs and symptoms of altitude sickness are headache, nausea, vomiting, and lack of appetite. If you experience some of these symptoms, you must report the situation to your trek guide. Your trek guide will handle the situation and decide whether to stop for a day, continue the trek, or descend to a lower altitude.

Not taking proper care and on-time treatment of altitude sickness results in severe situations like HAPE and HACE.

Altitude sickness preventive measures

If you don’t want to get altitude sickness during the trek, you must rehydrate frequently. Dehydration during the trekking is prevalent due to the heat and excessive sweating. Hence, with more sweat, losing body fluids results in dehydration, causing altitude sickness.

We recommend you drink filtered water with oral rehydration solutions.

The second most important way to prevent altitude sickness is not exposing the body parts to the winds. It’ll be best to cover your face with a mask, a beanie, thermals, trousers, etc.

Smoking, alcohol, and caffeinated drinks often promote altitude sickness symptoms. Hence, try avoiding such during the trek as far as possible.

Another way of dodging altitude sickness (which we don’t recommend) is consuming Diamox (Acetazolamide). Please consult with your doctor before consuming this drug.

Transportation during the trek

Here are all the transportation services you’ll get during Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek.

  • Airport to hotel transfer on your arrival
  • Private jeep/Bus drive from Kathmandu to Dovan
  • Muktinath-Jomsom Taxi

Our trekking guides and porters are self-sufficient to maintain their safety during the trek.

Medical emergencies and rescue

Mountains and high-altitude terrain are unpredictable. Hence, while trekking, you may need emergency helicopter rescue and hospitalization.

If you get severe altitude sickness or fractures, you’ll need a helicopter evacuation. Furthermore, depending on the situation, you must sit in the hospital for a few days to weeks.

Hence, we recommend you buy travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation. Without travel insurance, you won’t get the helicopter rescue on time, as helicopters hesitate to fly if clients don’t have insurance.

Note: Manaslu Circuit and Nar Phu Valley are Nepal government-restricted areas. The helicopters must process for flying permits, which takes a day at most. Hence, the helicopter evacuation takes at least two days if you get sick in these regions. However, to keep you safe, your trek guide makes every possible arrangement to bring you down to a lower altitude.

Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance is necessary if you’re considering the Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek. What makes travel insurance a must for this trek is that while on this trek, you’ll trek in two government-restricted areas. And if you get altitude sick or injured, you’ll get a helicopter rescue on time with travel insurance. However, helicopter companies hesitate to rescue in restricted areas if you don’t have travel insurance with helicopter coverage.

Apart from helicopter evacuation, travel insurance pays for your hospital and medication bills. Furthermore, if you lose or damage personal gear and other stuff during the trek, the travel insurance bears for the loss.

Hence, travel insurance is a must to have for this trek.

Note: We don’t buy travel insurance for our clients. However, we can recommend the best travel insurance providers in Nepal and abroad. Also, the trek cost you pay to us during booking doesn’t include the insurance.

Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek Permits

Here comes the most expensive section of this entire trek. You’ll need four different permits for the Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek.

  • Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (For Manaslu Circuit)
  • Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (For Manaslu Circuit)
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (For Nar Phu and Annapurna Circuit Trek)
  • Annapurna Restricted Area Permit (For Nar Phu Valley)

The restricted area permits (For Manaslu and Annapurna) costs $100 from September-November. Moreover, it costs $75 during other months.

Note: The trek cost you pay to us includes the permit and government paperwork costs, excluding your on-arrival visa.

You can read our Manaslu Circuit Trek Permits and Annapurna Trek Permits Blogs to learn more about the permits in depth.

Each day on the trek, you’ll start with breakfast, stop midway en route for lunch, and settle in at a tea house for overnight accommodation.

You’ll have meal choices throughout the trek. The meal options at higher altitudes are often limited. But, in lower regions, you’ll get almost everything you eat back home.

Tea houses generally offer twin-sharing rooms with attached bathrooms. However, the tea houses in higher regions of Manaslu Circuit Trek and Nar Phu Trek don’t have attached bathrooms. However, the tea houses in Annapurna Circuit are more sophisticated, and you’ll love every amenity they offer.

Wifi, Drinking Water, Hot Shower, and Electricity

All of these services cost Rs. 300-500 and are exclusive of the trek cost.

Most tea houses provide wifi. Hence, if you want to use the wifi, you must pay Rs. 200-300 every time.

The tea houses don’t ask for any money for cold drinking water. However, they charge Rs. 200-300 for a thermos of hot drinking water.

Since tea houses gas-run offer hot showers, they ask for money. Hot shower costs Rs. 300-500.

You’ll get free electricity charging at most places. However, during the peak season of trekking, the tea houses get filled with trekkers. Hence, you’ve to wait for a few hours to charge your devices.

Please note that the higher regions in Manaslu and Annapurna run solar power electricity. Hence, you may not get to charge your devices at one or two places.

Best time for Manaslu Annapurna Three Passes Trek

Spring and Autumn are the best seasons for Manaslu and Annapurna Three High Passes Trek. To describe it in one line “for the best weather, temperature, and awe-striking mountain panorama“.

It’s a must to have a beautiful weather condition for trekking. And in March, April, and May, the conditions for trekking become ideal. With apparent weather, rain-free days, gentle temperatures, greenery and blossoms, and lively landscapes, you’ll enjoy every step on the trek. Particularly, Manaslu and Annapurna become best in Spring with greenery and snow-capped mountains.

Autumn months, September to December, is the best month for trekking in Nepal. Autumn months are post-rainy season months, and thus, there’s no better time than September and October to witness greenery over the mountain deserts of Manang, Mustang, and Manaslu. Also, the snow-filled mountain panorama elevates the sightseeing experience.

Autumn is also the best time to trek these three passes of Manaslu and Annapurna. In Autumn, the high passes barely receive snowfall. Hence, crossing Kang La, Larkya La, and Thorong La becomes easy.
